Home-Start is a local community network of trained volunteers and experts helping families with young children through their challenging times. It supports families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, bereavement, financial guidance and many other issues.
Traditionally, Home-Start provides support in the family's home, for two hours once a week; however, during the coronavirus pandemic, it has needed to adapt its service to telephone befriending, supporting remotely. It has been working with Powys County Council this year to deliver its service, which is now more important than ever: Home-Start’s volunteer support is crucial in helping families to cope, develop resilience and stay positive through perhaps the most challenging time in their lives.
Home-Start works from referrals from health visitors, GPs, social care and childcare practitioners as well as those involved in mental health services, education, early years and probation. A family can also self-refer to Home-Start.
